Air Mattress

Our Top 5 Picks:

Camping trips and overnight stays away from home can mean that a person may have to resort on sleeping on a cot, a couch, or even on the ground. Using an air mattress can alleviate some of the stress that may occur when someone must spend the night away from his or her home. Konrad Kyeser invented the first airbed in medieval Germany. This military general created an inflatable bed out of leather and twine. Today’s mattresses are made out of sturdier materials, namely PVC vinyl plastic or rubber. Some beds feature soft linings of felt or similar materials. Other components of an air bed can include a foundation, either solid or split, rails, and rubber sheets for covering.

Customer Reviews:
"This bed is a step above the Aerobed.Unlike my previous 2 aerobeds, this mattress doesn't leak.None at all over an 8 day period of guests. Not evena slow leak.None! Pump is quick and the power deflate is a real time and space saver. Flocking on the mattress is also warmer than a cold plastic top. Can't believe how much less in price this was over the aerobeds-- a no-brainer!!! " – William

Customer Reviews:
"I bought this for my mom to use when she was visiting for 3 weeks.I was really worried because she has problems with her neck, back and shoulder. She said she would give this air bed 5 stars. We have owned several air matresses and none of them come close to the comfort of this one.It actually feels like a bed when you lay on it.I love the way there is an insert, allowing you to tuck sheets between the mattress and frame.Traditional air mattresses don't allow you to tuck in sheets and it can be very annoying for uses other than camping.I also like the way it is raised at the head of the mattress to resemble a headboard. This is really nice because it keeps pillows from slipping off the top of the "bed."The only reason this is still like an air mattress is because it is a little low to the ground.Otherwise, you can't tell it from a regular bed. Customer Reviews:
"I've had this air mattress for 5 months now and I really like it.It...
- holds the air (Note, we did have to "top off" the air after the first night of use. But, after 2 straight months of use, we never had a problem with it deflating after that first night.)
- is easy to get all the air out and fold up.You don't have to worry about trying to fit it back in a package that you can never get right.
- is comfortable.

Customer Reviews:
"We've had 4 - count them - 4 Aerobeds and every single one of them went flat after only a few uses.(The people at Bed, Bath and Beyond got tired of us returning them.)Thus, I went on the hunt for another brand.Having camped since - oh - the age of 1, and seeing the plethura of Coleman products my parents used (tent, sleeping bags, stove, icechest, water jugs, etc.) it was no surprise that this air bed was exceptional.(Too bad the didn't have these in the 60's and 70's!)

We had the first one of these beds for several years. The ONLY reason it went flat is because my sister-in-law left it uncovered and one of our 6 cats poked a hole in it.(Gee: what a surprise!)We bought another one and it's just as great as the first one.

I will never buy anything but this brand. It's cheaper than an AeroBed and better quality.

Customer Reviews:
"I bought a pair of these mattresses at the last minute on price alone because we needed a pair of twins in a hurry. They held their air through four full days/nights of camping by two teenage boys. They boys like to flop down and bounce around - goofing off as kids do.
We used standard twin sheets which stayed tucked in.The mattresses did not get cold in the night (the flocking helps) and never lost a bit of air. They were very quick to inflate, quick to deflate, and easy to roll up to pack for the next trip.Winners... who knew? Now YOU do.

Update. The review above was written during the summer. The mattresses were since stored in a covered tub in our hot Florida attic for many months until being pulled out for a Thanksgiving camping trip.Once again these mattresses held up to the teenager test. They were just as supple and fresh as the first day out of the box.I'm really happy with these and plan to use them again in another few months.

Customer Reviews:
"I bought this product and Coleman's. Coleman's is better in my opinion; it has much better pattern, which allows one to sleep better, and user friendly system of letting the air out. It took me 1 minute to let the air out of Coleman, and 20 minutes of hard work to get it out of this. They are both somewhat uncomfortable, but this one a lot more so due to highly anti ergonomic pattern. The positive side of it is a better air pump. " – Clair Divino

Customer Reviews:
"I bought this for a camping trip in yosemite.I cannot sleep on the ground and I wanted a mattress that wouldn't take up half a tent since we had 3 people in a tent. This mattress helped me get so much more sleep than the other guys in our tent. Also it was better at keeping me warm as opposed to sleeping on the cold ground.Best of all it was $100 cheaper than most camping air mattresses, which seems ridiculous to me to spend that much money on a camping mattress. The only caveat to this mattress is that the nozzle is not the most robust, it's just a typical pool inflatable nozzle that can pop open if the nozzle is wet.I just put some duct tape over it and it was fine. You'll also need a flatter piller to put on top of the inflatable pillow " – A. Customer Reviews:
"If you want to blow up low pressure items (toys, beach balls, mattresses, small pools, etc.), this pump works great and VERY fast. It can also be used to deflate these items quickly and completely. However, if you want to pump up bike or car tires or hard balls like basketballs or footballs, look elsewhere. It doesn't have the oompf or the adapter to do those things. Why the previous reviewer thought it worked on bike tires, I can't imagine, since you can see from the picture that it doesn't come with the appropriate adapter. Plus, it is really just a fan, not a compressor. If you need portability, buy the 12V rechargeable one. This one needs 120 VAC current. " – Doctor Work "doctorwork.blogspot.com"

Customer Reviews:
"I purchased a no name air mattress for fifty dollars at target and it lasted two months before it started to leak. Since I need a mattress for everyday use I decided to search for a good quality one to last. I looked at reviews and found nothing but good things about this company. The reviews were about the non raised version of this and I didn't find any for this one so I just want everyone to know how good this really is. I got the package fast and opened it up. It inflated in about 3 minutes and I got on it and started stress testing it. I had my elbows and knees support my body on it and it did not stretch like the one I used before in those spots. I was very pleased. The material used is very high quality and feels durable and stretch resistant. The seams are high quality and after sleeping in it the first day I knew I made the right choice. I'm 6'4" and 300 lbs and this mattress handled me very well i think. If you are looking for an airbed look no further this will do just fine. " – Ruslan

"My, almost 300 lb football player, son used this for 3 weeks after having an operation. It was easier for him to be in the living room, than his room; but the pullout couch was just not an option, not comfortable for someone his size.Put this mattress on pullout and it worked great. He said it was very comfortable and it was easy to put away and blow up ( took less than 5 minutes for either). My daughter then took it camping and loved it.I was able to fold it and put in original box to store away.Good deal, good mattress. " – Baltimore Bill "Bill"

Because the air chamber can hold a great deal of air, these beds are durable and can be used by adults and children alike. It is noted that airbeds can help alleviate common muscular and skeletal problems, like backaches, headaches, and pain that is caused by arthritis. Some models accommodate pregnant women. These beds allow for an expectant mother to sleep on her stomach by forming itself around her stomach.

Because it is made out of industrial-strength plastic or rubber, an inflatable bed is difficult to destroy. Children can bounce on the bed without fear of popping it. In the event that a bed becomes ruptured, many manufacturers now include repair kits with the mattress. These kits contain plastic or rubber strips that can be cut and applied over the hole in the bed.

Customer Reviews:
"When I'm going on a family camping trip where there is no packing involved and all I have to do is set up the tent and gear, I always take along this Coleman flocked Queen size bed for my wife and I.It is pretty easy to inflate (especially with the Quickpump), and is so comfortable I sometimes almost forget I'm sleeping on the ground. We also use this mattress a lot at home when we have lots of company and don't have enough beds to go around.

My one complaint with this bed, and one which I have heard others share, is that it is not big enough. It is supposed to be a queen size bed, but it just doesn't seem as large as our queen size bed at home.Aside from this minor complaint, however, the Coleman flocked mattress has served me well.In fact, I slept on one for the first month I was away from home at college, and was still satisfied with its comfort after sleeping on it for over four weeks. Customer Reviews:
"I purchased this for an out-of-town-visitor and it performed well for the week. It didn't deflate until I said so, and was functional as a place to sleep, which apparently is an awful lot to ask of an inflatable bed.

It was moderately comfortable, and seemed higher than the Intex Queen I had purchased a few years back. Plus, it has an ever so slightly raised baffle surrounding the entire bed in case you are worried about rolling off in the night. I read the reviews, it happens.

The bed inflated and deflated easily with the pump and storing it was simple. I liked the design of this bed without the "built-in" pillow. I don't know about you, but I like a real pillow that I can thrash around or smash up in a ball when I sleep. Could be just me.

I would definitely recommend the electric pump that this one comes with. It will make you happy.

Customer Reviews:
"I'll give it 3 stars. It's a nice shape, and fits twin sheets perfectly, unlike my previous model by Coleman. However, it arrived new with holes and was instantly dismayed.

It may have been the way the item was folded, and the type of plastic the bed uses. The sharp folds in packaging may have caused the creases to form holes once the bed is unfolded. The bed material is not that stretchable, which is probably why it keeps it's shape once you blow it up, but when the creases are unfolded, they can't stretch enough not to give way and tear.I don't see how others could get this bed and not have the same issue.

I had to decide whether to send it back for a refund, or just live with the holes.Since they provide patching materials with the bed, I'll just patch the holes and move on.Will I buy again or recommend...er, no.

"I had this shipped to me in Afghanistan. It is much better than the cheap mattresses the government provided us.It has not lost any air pressure after over a month's worth of continuous use.The top surface is lumpy so I recommend a foam topper also.I'm using a three inch topper and that is overkill; one inch would probably do OK. " – Bob

Customer Reviews:
"This bed is very cool. It had two aspects that made me get it - first, the built in pump with remote controller and second, the memory foam top. The bed inflates quickly with the remote. The only negative on it is that there is not an option to just turn it on, and walk away, you have to continue pushing the button for it to inflate. Once inflated, the bed is quite comfortable. Soft, yet just firm enough so you don't feel like you are sleeping on an exercise ball. The foam section is not that thick (you can unzip the top), but it does the job to make the sleeping surface feel smooth, which was what I was looking for. Very good, and would recommend to others. " – Ben Hartmann "BikerBuecher.de"

Airbeds come in a variety of sizes and colors. People tend to like bigger size mattresses as they allow for more movement during the night and allow more than one person to sleep on the bed. Manufacturers now offer colors and themes that appeal to both children and adults. Colors for these beds include pink, camouflage, blue, red, yellow, and floral. Children’s themes include princess and race cars.

Inflating these portable beds is accomplished by using the bed’s valve and blowing air into the bed’s chamber. The owner can attach an air hose to the bed’s valve and pump the desired amount of air into the bed’s air chamber. Newer models now feature air valves that use batteries for quick and easy inflating. These newer valves can be activated by pressing a button or by pressing firmly on the valve.

Because the beds hold quite a bit of air, they can also be used in water as a raft or as a pool toy. Some mattress makers also make pool toys in the same manner as they make air beds, only smaller to fit a child’s size.

If an overnight stay is in order, an air mattress is often used as an alternative to sleeping on the ground or on a cot or couch. Featuring durable materials and easy inflating, these beds can be used for overnight guests or for camping or fishing trips.
